How health systems accelerate their RPM strategies with Redox
Aug 19, 2022
While not new, Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) has exploded in recent years on the backs of new reimbursement models, a push toward value-based care, and ongoing improvements in device accuracy. Most top health systems are implementing or actively considering expansions to RPM programs for a wide range of chronic conditions (e.g. hypertension, diabetes, kidney disease, COPD), and episodic care (e.g. joint replacement, prenatal). Many have already begun to pilot multiple RPM solutions, and those that have not, will soon.
RPM is the use of digital technology to capture health data from patients and transmit them to care teams for assessment, recommendation, and instructions. Well-designed RPM programs can provide more equitable access to care, improve outcomes, and enhance patient and clinician experiences while also lowering costs.
With so many RPM solutions on the market and the diversity of different patient populations across and within health systems, a flexible technology stack that enables a portfolio management approach is key to success. This means minimizing switching costs by enabling quick trials of new solutions. Organizations must be capable of scaling the solutions that show promise and swapping out those that are not meeting the goals aligned with the larger organization (e.g. optimizing hospital capacity, enhancing financial results for patients in risk-based care arrangements, alleviating clinical burden, etc.).
This is easier said than done. Unique RPM vendor software makes it hard for health system IT teams to set consistent and repeatable electronic health record (EHR) clinician procedures. A non-trivial effort is required to engineer and support each vendor’s unique EHR interoperability workflow. Further, clinician training for different RPM solutions contributes to clinician burden, limiting software adoption and reducing clinician satisfaction. These complexities may lead to a health system taking months, or even years to implement and validate RPM solutions, which makes it impossible to get the expected value from RPM programs.
So what is a healthcare system to do? What is the best way to take advantage of the expanding RPM solution marketplace in an efficient and productive manner?
The Redox RPM Accelerator
As a response to this challenge, Redox is pleased to introduce our RPM Accelerator. This new offering allows health systems to connect their EHR (85+ are supported) to RPM devices and software with reusable Redox API actions that enable faster integration, testing, training, switching, and scaling of RPM solutions.
An API Action is a discrete capability of the Redox API. It accomplishes a specific job to be done for our customer’s integrated application. The Redox API provides a robust list of Actions that clearly state the job needed to be done in an integrated environment such as checking eligibility, ordering a device, retrieving clinical data, and more.
With the RPM Accelerator, health systems benefit from:
Predictable go-lives
Repeatable data exchange procedures that are used across RPM vendors improve the IT team's confidence in how much each solution will cost to implement, how long it will take to do it, and what it will take to maintain it.
Increased adoption
Consistent clinician EHR-native workflows for orders, provisioning, connection, and results across RPM vendors simplify training and reduce the process variation that slows down adoption and leads to burden.
Simplified switching
A single API, consistent data formats, and repeatable procedures simplify turning on/off connections to RPM vendor solutions mitigating the risks and costs of switching.
When a health system chooses the Redox RPM Accelerator, they get expert integration architecture and project management support from our customer success team to guide them through an implementation process that has been hardened over the course of 3800+ integrations.
RPM solutions are changing the way healthcare is delivered and received, while also tangibly impacting access, equity, and outcomes. Moving forward, the most successful health systems will establish a foundation that provides the capability to flexibly compose and deliver RPM experiences that provide maximum benefit to patients, clinicians, and the bottom line. Do not let technical hurdles or headaches prevent you from establishing that foundation.
